Whether beginner or pro, you will be coached in a way that makes sense and gets results. Clients receive constant feedback and support about where you are and how to get where you want to go with your surfing.

MTD Surf Academy Programs

Our Surf Academy Programs were created to teach surfing at a high level to those who wish to surf at a high level.  We have two main categories of programs;

MTD Surf Coaching Programs

Our Surf Coaching Programs are private, customized training programs designed to take your surfing to the “next level,” whether beginner or pro.  We begin with an initial assessment, then design a program that sets realistic goals and supports you in getting results. MTD Surf Coaching Programs can be anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 years or more. The path of progression never ends! See our Skill Levels below for more insight into how we assess surfing skills.

MTD Surfing 101: Foundations of a Surfer Program

Making the Drop’s Surfing 101 Program supports new surfers in reaching MTD  Skill Level 1, which incidently takes the average new surfer about 100 hours of water time. Reaching the “100 hour threshold” in a reasonable amount of time is crucial for learning and embodying fundamental surfing skills. This is an intensive program that supports you in taking on surfing in a committed, disciplined manner. You will get results and of course have fun!

The following list comprises our proprietary MTD Surfing Skill Levels Matrix.

MTD Surfing Skill Levels

• MTD Level 1
  Focus: Catch waves with good positioning & timing, balanced stance, riding waves in control, safe entry & exit of water
• MTD Level 2
  Focus: Level 1 skills + basic controlled turns at speed, staying in the pocket, late drops in a variety of conditions, basic board & equipment analysis
• MTD Level 3
  Focus: Level 2 + basic execution of manuevers ( re-entries, noserides, etc.) , relaxed in crowded & strong conditions
• MTD Level 4
  Focus: Level 3 + executing maneuvers with power, control & style, confidence and composure in overhead+ waves, surfboard shaping theory
• MTD Competition Level 1
  Focus: Level 4 + composure under pressure, heat strategy, relaxation techniques, pushing limits free-surfing
• MTD Competition Level 2
  Focus: Comp Level 1 + consistently getting through heats, placing in comps, mental + physical fine tuning
• MTD Pro Level
  Focus: Mastery of maneuvers, always pushing edge, reinvention of approach, deeper self-awareness, healthy practices
• MTD Soul-Surfer Level
  Focus: Less focus on competitive skills & more on discovering authentic style & approach, experimentation in surfboard design, breaking through physical, mental and spiritual limitations, mindful surfing-mindful living

Santa Cruz Surfing Tours

One Day Surfing Clinic – $375

4 hours of private instruction, and guided Santa Cruz Surf Tour.

Perched on the northern tip of the Monterey Bay, Santa Cruz is home to true world class surfing. Within an hours drive south and north, along one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world, are numerous point, beach, reef and jetty breaks. With relatively mild climate and great exposure to swells from all directions, you are likely to find good surfing conditions throughout the year. In addition to the surfing, there is world class kite-boarding and windsurfing, mountain biking, paragliding, hiking, trail running, scuba diving and sea-kayaking. The amazing coastal redwood forests breathe life into you like nothing else, and the locally grown organic produce, wines, beer and seafood will nourish your body and spirit day after day.
